It’s a company’s dream for its product to become the official staple of something. Chrysler is the official car of the NFL. Woodford Reserve is the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby. Adidas is the official clothing brand of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Something few people know, however, is that many unexpected things have official beers (think shellfish and natural bodies of water). Here are 10 beers chosen to represent things you wouldn’t expect!
Narragansett Beer – Official Beer of the Clam
Of all the things that you wouldn’t think necessitated an official beer, the clam would probably be one of them. Nevertheless, Narragansett Brewing Company has declared itself official beer of the clam, even putting this statement on all of its cans.
In an interview with GrubStreet, CEO Mark Hellendrung said Narragansett wanted to be an offical beer of something, but sponsoring a sports team was just out of the reach of a small regional brewery. “We were sitting around, drinking beers, and we thought, What is quintessential about New England?” Hellendrung recalls. “We kept coming back to summertime clam bakes and clam chowder. So we said, ‘Fuck it, we’ll declare ourselves the Official Beer of the Clam.’” Rest assured that even though this brew represents clams, it does not share its flavor with them.
Infamous Brewing – Official Beer of Lake Travis
Yep, a lake can have an official beer! Founded in Texas during the 2012 boom in the Austin craft beer scene, Infamous Brewing operates near Lake Travis, a 63-mile long lake that is the pride and joy of those living around it. Being the official beer of the Lake, Infamous brews are said to reflect the easy going and laidback mood that the Lake and its residents hold. When it’s getting too hot out and everyone heads for the Lake, you can bet that the locals are sipping one of Infamous Brewing Company’s craft beers.
Brewery Ommegang – Official Beer(s) of Game of Thrones
Beer is coming! Game of Thrones fans can enjoy one of three different craft beers created by Brewery Ommegang in the theme of the epic series. Phil Leinhart, Brewmaster at Ommegang, said of the Iron Throne ale, “With a Lannister currently on the throne, it made sense to do a delicate, but piercing Golden Blonde Ale with Noble hops. Iron Throne is certainly fair in color and soft in appearance, yet it still possesses a complexity and bite to be on guard for.” Take the Black Stout is inspired by the brotherhood of the Night’s Watch – it’s deep, dark and complex like those who have sworn the oath to defend Westeros against threats from the north. Fire and Blood is red ale (of course) named after the motto of House Targaryen, and inspired by Daenerys Targaryen and her dragons.
Mountain Oasis Electric Pale Ale – Official Beer of the Mountain Oasis Electronic Music Festival
Brewed by Asheville Brewing Company of Asheville, North Carolina, Mountain Oasis Pale Ale is the official beer of Asheville’s Mountain Oasis Electronic Music Festival. Thousands flock to this music festival in Asheville every year to see their favorite artists perform, and this pale ale’s electric taste matches the energetic and exciting mood that embodies the festival. With a beer created specifically for the attendees of this gigantic music extravaganza, everyone attending the festival will be pleased to find great beer to go along with some great music.
8-Bit Pale Ale – Official Beer of Retro Gamers
Coming from Tallgrass Brewing Company, 8-Bit Pale Ale is the self-proclaimed official beer of retro gamers. In the company’s own words, the beer, just like the 8-bit retro games of old, is “spectacularly simple at first, yet remarkably fun and complex when you get into it.” This beer “hop-rocketed American pale ale” is perfect for a long night of gaming and is sure to bring back memories of simpler times in gaming.
Estrella Damm – Official Beer of FC Barcelona
The last thing you would expect to represent the FC Barcelona soccer team would be a non-alcoholic beer. Nevertheless, Estrella Damm Non-Alcoholic is the official beer of the FC Barcelona. For 137 years Estrella Damm N.A. has been the number one beer in Barcelona, so it’s safe to say that it has earned its status as official beer of FC Barcelona. It is hard to find people drinking anything other than Estrella on game days.
TailGate Beer – Official Beer of the Tailgating
Created by an avid sports fan who also is an avid beer drinker, TailGate beer caters to tailgaters and, as such, has named itself the official beer of tailgating. The goal was to create great, fully flavored craft beer without high alcohol content. You know, so you can down a six-pack over the course of a game without getting to drunk to know the score. Their online store is stocked with tailgating gear to complete the experience.
Nunmoere Black – Official Beer of Lent
The self-proclaimed official beer of Lent, Nunmoere Black, promises a big reason to celebrate before Ash Wednesday. This might not mean much if you’re not Catholic, but the brewery has fun with it anyway. Graced with the sillouhette of a nun and brewed by Flat12 Bierworks in Indiana, the beer instigates a bit of silliness around the otherwise restrictive Lent season. Bierworks hosts a Lent Wall with inspirational ideas for what to give up for Lent and sets up faux confessional booths so you can lighten your spirit before you imbibe.
National Bohemian – Official Beer of Baltimore
National Bohemian, a nearly 130 year-old brewery, became the offical sponsor of the Baltimore Orioles in 1965. That eventually led to its reputation as the official beer of the city of Baltimore. Nicknamed Natty Boh, the brewery’s iconic Mr. Boh sits atop a high-rise building keeping watch over the city.
Napa Smith Brewery – Official Beer of USA Water Polo
Napa Valley’s only production brewery might seem a more likely fit for official beer of Napa Valley. But the insanely active folks at Napa Smith Brewery were much more interested in being the official beer of something that reflected their enjoyment of everything from swimming the Alcatraz to biking…and water polo. When the opportunity arose to partner with USA Water Polo, Napa Smith jumped.
