How much do you spend on craft beer each year? According to a new consumer survey, it’s probably more than you think. Seattle-based Survey Analytics found that beer drinkers, on average, shell out $1,200 a year on their favorite brews. That’s the equivalent of 115 six-packs at $11 each or 211 pints of beer at $6 each. There are a few other interesting take-aways from this beer survey (check out the infographic at the end). Advertising & Location Trump Price in Determining Favorite Brewery
It doesn’t seem that price plays as much of a role in determining brand love among beer drinkers as you might expect. Instead, 29 percent of consumers said where the beer is brewed is more important than price. Thirty-two percent decided what to drink based on the best beer ads, making advertising more important than ever for breweries. What style of beer a brewery makes influenced favorite brands for 22 percent of beer drinkers. Only five percent of those surveyed said price determined their favorite breweries.
How Much Beer Do Americans Drink?
Twenty-two percent buy and drink beer two to three times a week, 20 percent have just one beer a week, and nine percent (this includes us!) enjoy five or more beers a week.
Mass Beer Still Outsells Craft Beer
Craft beers did not make it into the favorite brands list in this survey, but that’s to be expected given the small (but growing) market share of independent breweries. Budweiser retains its status as the King of Beers with 50 percent of beer drinkers identifying it their favorite brand. Interestingly Budweiser polarizes beer drinkers – it’s also the least favorite brand among 46 percent of consumers. Other favorite brands include Coors, Corona and Stella.
Thirty-three percent of consumers said they prefer the taste of ale to lager. Which makes you wonder how Budweiser, Coors, Corona and Stella come out as top brands.
Home Brewing is on the Rise
A whopping 68 percent of beer lovers want to brew their own beer and would love to take lessons from favorite craft brewers such as Dogfish Head and Breckenridge. Roughly 14 percent already have brewed and enjoyed their own beer at home. There is an appeal to creating a home brew and learning about small microbreweries. What state shines as the best at brewing craft beer? Nineteen percent say California.
About the Survey
Survey Analytics conducted the survey of 300 general beer consumers ahead of SuperBowl 2014 across multiple platforms, including computers, smartphones and tablets. The survey received responses from 42 states. Respondents were selected from Survey Analytics’ general population panel and its panel management/community management tools. Additional respondents were recruited via Facebook and Twitter.
